Home education and school
Why more families are choosing home education
More and more children in England are being home educated. Here's what the official figures say.
The numbers
According to the Department for Education, 126,000 children were being home educated in England on census day in autumn 2025. The autumn before, it was 111,700.
Over the 2024/25 school year, 175,900 children were home educated at some point. Some families do it for a while and then go back to school.
Why families choose it
The reasons are really varied. For some it's a choice they've always wanted to make. For others it follows a hard time at school, worries about anxiety or mental health, or a child whose needs just weren't being met.
If that's you, please know you're far from alone.
What it looks like day to day
Home education can be flexible and built around your child. It's also a big job. Lots of parents bring in help for the subjects they feel less sure about, especially at GCSE and A-Level.
